Dorman Smith’s modest foundation in the north of England is where our story started. In the eighteen hundreds two engineers, Charles Mark Dorman and Reginald Arthur Smith, the best in their field bought the company, and from there our illustrious history is a testament to where we are today.
Our UK Head Office in Braintree is the base for our Manufacturing, Customer Service, Quality, Finance, Distribution and Supply Chain teams.
Our Preston Office is the Technical and Design centre, where we have a fantastic team with the technical knowledge to ensure your project meets the specification, current regulations and product design quality.
Our Metal Work Fabricators in Clacton, A&R Engineering, helps us streamline our supply chain in the production of metal parts created specifically for our products.
Throughout the last few years, we have adapted and diversified with the ever changing economy that has affected every aspect of our business. Investing in employees, machinery and onshoring our products has been at the forefront of our decisions.
We want to ensure that our long held traditional values are upheld as we go into the future of Dorman Smith.
Onshoring – UK Manufacturing
Bringing back manufacturing to the UK secures our Supply Chain from order to delivery by decreasing lead times and increasing capacity.
Acquiring our Clacton site – A&R Engineering has helped us in our vision of UK manufacturing.
Our Loadbank YB1 MCCB Panelboards is a perfect example of this. Designed initially in the Preston office, metal work produced in our Clacton site, and final assembly, manufacturing, testing and despatch in Braintree.
Moving to UK production and assembly has resulted in a reduction in lead time, greater inventory controls and iving us the flexibility to react quickly to customer demand.
Going forward we are striving to do this in other areas of our business also.

Dorman Smith Switchgear LLC is the associated partner of Dorman Smith UK and have been in operation for over 30 years supplying and servicing an eclectic range of installations across the Middle East. Headquartered in Dubai, and with representative offices across the GCC, we design, manufacture, assemble, perform routine tests, and supply a complete range of Low Voltage Switchgear products.
Our capabilities stem from our engineering expertise and the ability to offer our customers the best, with respect to products and services. All proprietary Dorman Smith Switchgear LLC systems and components are tested in internationally accredited test laboratories and compliant to the latest relevant standards.
